To get to Picton from the North Island you can take the Cook Strait Ferry. Taking the ferry can be an experience in itself, depending on what the weather is doing. When you get off the ferry from Wellington you land at the small seaport of Picton, the gateway to the South Island. 

 

There are many wonderful sights to see here, and if your family is into tramping, the Queen Charlotte Track is great for strong trampers (not recommended for the smaller members of your family though!) You do have to be fit to do the walk.

 

Once you here you can travel north west to Havelock, Nelson,  Takaka or Collingwood. Or continue south to Blenheim and on to Christchurch. Then again you could head off to the West Coast and to Greymouth.
