So close yet so far from the rat race of Auckland
Waiheke Island is New Zealand's most populated offshore island, yet it is easily accessible from downtown Auckland via the fast ferries. Waiheke Island has a wonderful range of wineries, some providing accommodation, cafes and fine restaurant dining.

For the family Waiheke has many beaches where your family can unwind. From the Matiatia Wharf, where the passenger ferry drops you off, you can continue up to Oneroa where you can enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafes.

Beaches and walks

Oneroa, Waiheke Island

Oneroa Beach is a wonderful area and is accessible by foot from Ocean View Road, next to the Citizen Advice Centre and public toilets. Oneroa Bay has shade and public toilets at the far end. However with no shops down there and a steepish climb back up, food should be purchased prior to walking down.

My favourite beach at this end of the island is Little Oneroa Beach. This has a wonderful play area, suitable for a wide age group, lots of shade and has a shop and bar-b-que area all very close by.  It is just a little further up from Ocean View Road and the corner of Goodwin Ave.

Onetangi
Another very popular beach is Onetangi Beach which is located at Onetangi. There is very little shade and we recommend you bring some with you, if you can.

Stony Batter
Stony Batter provides a  fun family outing. Children need to be good walkers as the walk is longish to get to Stony Batter. The New Zealand Army built a maze of tunnels and three large gun emplacements during the Second World War. This is open to the public, we recommend that children be accompanied by an adult, and that you take at least two torches with you as a safety precaution, as these tunnels are very dark and long. Phone: 027 305 2772 for tours.

You can now continue on from Stony Batter and do the Loop Road, this is a very scenic drive with stunning views.
