Accommodation
Taupo sits on the northern end of Lake Taupo and is New
Zealand's largest lake; its waters flow into the great Waikato River.
Other than its lake, Taupo boast many hot thermal areas, some open free
to the public. See our
Parks and Reserves
section below for details.
This is a great
place to stop if travelling between Wellington and Auckland. Either
stay a night or two and take in its sights, or enjoy one of the many
parks if only on a flying visit. We recommend Taupo Domain with its
Superloo, as this has a free parent room, play area outside, and is just across the
road from the shops.
Accommodation
We have a
wide range of family accommodation for Taupo coming
soon.

Parks
and walks
- The Tongariro (Taupo) Domain which is located on Tongariro
Road (part of the through road for State Highways One and Five), has Cobb and Co train rides for $1.00. The park also has
a great playground for children of all ages, picnic tables, and public
toilets (see comment below for more details).
-
- A great feature of Tongariro Domain is the public
loos. These provide parents with a free parent
room, with changing table, adult toilet, microwave, sink
and seating area with toys for children. Nappies can be bought
individually from the attendant.
-
- Take the children on an easy walk to see thermal mud pools at Craters
of the Moon. Admission is free,
but remember these are thermal mud pools and craters, and children must
be supervised at all times.
-
- Taupo's most famous falls are the Huka Falls. With large
volumes of water rushing over the falls, is a great sight to see, and
its free.
-
- The Aratiatia Rapids have floodgates which open on a regular
basis, at 10am 12 noon, 2pm and 4pm to release the water. Free
entry.
