Mud pools, geysers and fun, fun, fun!

The town of Rotorua, north-east of Lake Taupo in the North Island, is located on the shores of Lake Rotorua. There are several other lakes in the same region, including Lake Rotoiti, Lake Tarawera, Lake Rotoehu and Lake Okareka, which makes the area special in its own right.

Yet it's not just the lakes that attract thousands of  visitors to this area each year. There are the steaming mud pools, gushing geysers, and the smell of sulphur, plus action-plus adventure activities, that have visitors coming back again and again for more.

Rotorua has built its tourist industry on this thermal wonderland, and there are many things that families can do here that will make you want to come back again and again.

Parks and walks

In central Rotorua, Kuirau Park offers the public a lot to see and do from thermal pools in action to a great playground. The park can be accessed off Tarewa Road, via Lake Road or Ranolf Street with access just south of Haupapa Street on your right, with ample parking available. There is a miniature railway here, plus a playground to enjoy once you have seen the thermal area.

The Orchid Gardens, just off Hinemaru Street, are well worth a visit especially for those with green fingers.

If you enjoy the sulphur smell, why not take the walking track along Sulphur flats. This walking track starts at Amohau Street, just past Hinemaru Street and starts with a walk past a thermally active area. Continuing on the walk you make your way along the Puarenga Stream, eventually finishing back on Amohau Street, at the intersection of Sala Street and Te Ngare Road.

There are many reserves throughout Rotorua. Here we have listed some of the larger ones:

Arikikapakapa Reserve is situated between the Old Taupo Road and Hemo Road.

Tihiotonga Centennial Park is off Mokoia Drive and Moncur Drive.

Linton Park, in the suburb of Mangakakahi, has the Mangakakahi Stream running through it and is accessible from several roads including Edmond Road and View Road.

Lastly, if your family is up to a place with more demanding walks, then the Whakarewarewa Forest off Long Mile Road has a large variety of walks, including a lovely walk through the Redwood Grove. Gates at the forest entrance are closed at night.

Rainbow Springs

A visit to Rainbow Springs is a really AWESOME day out!

Here, you can gaze at the Gecko, spy on a Kiwi and even see the newborn Kiwi chicks that just came out of their eggs. You can spot the Keas in the trees and even feed an ENORMOUS Rainbow Trout….

You can go for exciting bushwalks, have a picnic at the pavilion on Fairy Lawn, meet Rattle the Pig and Pip the Ponui Donkey, feed the cute pigs and get so close to nature like you probably have never seen it before. There is a huge amount of native New Zealand flora and fauna to see here at Rainbow Springs. We have a heap of fun activities especially for kids, including our famous Kids Fishing Days.

Rainbow Springs is wheelchair and pram friendly and we provide an easily accessible and totally amazing look at a number of amazing endangered species. So… tell your folks where you want to go! All the furry, feathered and fishy friends here at Rainbow Springs just can’t wait to meet you all! www.rainbowsprings.co.nz
