- The town of Martinborough was founded back in 1881 by John Martin.
And that is where it gets the Martin in Martinborough!
-
- Martinborough is best known for its boutique vineyards that are
spread throughout this area. Some are even walking distance from the
town square! And of course where you find great wine you will also find
great food. There are great takeaway shops around the town square, so
that all the family can enjoy the tasty delights this town has to
offer.
-
- A unique way to get here from
Wellington
is by train. Tranzmetro run a weekend train service from Wellington
Station to Martinborough. The main town of the Wairarapa is
Masterton
about a 30 minute drive from Martinborough. If visiting this area in
October don't forget to see the
Gladstone
Scarecrow Festival - this is recommended as a great family day
out. Take a camera and a packed lunch, it is well worth the drive.
-
- Other places to visit while you are here are the
Hutt Valley
and
Wellington.

- If you are feeling a bit more energetic try the Rimutaka Incline
which is located a few kilometres outside
Upper
Hutt
on your way to Martinborough. This is a great walk or
mountain bike ride. Make sure you take a torch for the tunnels and
plenty of food and water. This is suitable for older children who have
the fitness for a full days walking or several hours biking. My husband
did the Incline with our then four year old son on the back of his bike and
said he would do it again.
