-
- Lying to the east of the Ruahine Ranges and
21 kms from the coast overlooking Hawke Bay is Hastings.
-
- The earthquake that destroyed
Napier
in 1931 also caused large amounts of damage to Hastings. Like
Napier, the city has survived and now much of the
thriving economy is due to the area's rich
agricultural and horticultural industries, with the
wineries bringing in much of the tourist dollars.
