What happens when you as a Grandparent Step
in to help an at risk child:
All I can say is if you are placed into a position
where children are at risk and you are asked to step in or you do step
in. Go into this with open eyes, you are up for many thousands of
dollars in legal fee’s, counsel for child and psychologist costs and
stress so horrendous you will age before your own eyes.
If you own your own home, but have no spare cash
and you’re earnings are below the threshold, you may be able to get
Legal Aid. But you will have a caveat placed upon your home.
Indeed if CYF are involved, your life will become that of access
visits, social workers coming and going and demanding, major stressful
Family Group Conferences where your integrity will be challenged. And
then we get to the court appearances, where the abuser (and lets call
them what they really are) will turn the tables on you and make you
out to be the worst people on earth. What did you do….you were
prepared to stand up for an at risk child. The abuser invariably will
get legal aid.
Remember you will be dealing with children, who
because of the abuse will be behind emotionally, scholastically, some
may have special needs or these may develop further on, and they may
need counseling also. You may get minimum payment to raise these
children, if you are lucky and the WINZ or CYF social worker tells you
about benefits available.
You will lose the joy of being a grandparent, your
retirement and life, as you knew it. This will indeed go on for years
and years.
Am I being cynical? Perhaps I am, but this is a
reality folks, all because one was prepared to stand up for an ‘at
risk abused child’. Doesn’t seem right does it? L

When the unthinkable happens. A grandparents
love.
Grandchildren come to us for many
reasons unfortunately too often from abuse and neglectful
situations. This is not the only reason:
-
We have godparents who are raising
their godchildren.
-
Grandparents who are caring for
grandchildren whose parent/s may have died or a serious or even
terminal illness.
-
Mental illness is another which
bring us to this role.
Some grandparents are caring for a
disabled parent as well as the grandchildren. What ever reason you
have the care of the grandchildren or children of others we will
support you, treasure you for you indeed are doing God's work on
earth.
- You see together we do and will
make a difference in a child's life.
