Wanaka A&P Show

The Upper Clutha A & P show was first held in Cromwell in 1895. Now set on the beautiful shores of Lake Wanaka, it is arguably one of the most stunning settings in the country for an A & P Show. The Upper Clutha A & P Show is the second largest agricultural and pastoral show in the South Island. It is traditionally held around the second weekend in March and is one of the last shows of the year.

It is one of Wanaka's major annual events and is supported by the whole community and indeed enjoyed by all competitors, spectators and trade exhibitors.

Auckland

New Penguin crèche opens at Kelly Tarlton’s

Auckland’s newest, and coolest, day-care centre has opened at Kelly Tarlton’s. This crèche isn’t a time-out spot for younger visitors – it has been created especially for this seasons Gentoo penguin chicks and is designed to replicate the way they are raised in the wild.

10 Gentoo chicks have recently hatched at Kelly Tarlton’s. Some of the eldest are hitting the age where they start getting into trouble, so the crèche has been set up to keep them safe and stimulated – and to give mum and dad a well-deserved break!

Visitors will have a great view of the crèche from the Snowcat ride and viewing windows but some lucky folk will also get to see the very small chicks. Their parents feed them a diet of partially digested and regurgitated herrings that looks like a fishy gruel – not very appetising to us but a real winner for the chicks who have huge appetites and are therefore regularly popping out from under their parent’s protection to ask for more.

Sovereign OceanKids

Sovereign OceanKidsAt last, a race for the kids.  Kiwi kids love to spend the summer at the beach, so it is wonderful that now they too can participate in ocean swimming - one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports. The emphasis will be on fun, swim and water safety, and the opportunity to learn new skills.  All kids will receive coaching and training advice from a New Zealand swim team member, and members of Surf Life Saving New Zealand will support every race.  What an event!

Everyone is a ‘winner’ for completing the event!

To enter, all kids must 10 years of age or under as at 1 January 2010 and will be capable of swimming 200m competently in a pool.  Entry fee is $20 per child.

New Zealand Police Museum

The New Zealand Police Museum, situated at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Porirua opened in September this year after large scale redevelopment.

Visitors to the new museum will discover real life stories of police bravery and heroism and be able to examine how technology and innovation have changed police work. Interactive exhibitions and programmes will take visitors ‘up close and personal’ with policing methods of the past, present and future.

NZ Police’s vision of ‘Safer Communities Together’ will be reflected in the redeveloped display by displaying police work through a fresh lens. If you have ever thought that you would make a good police officer, you will be able to find out just what it takes to be a cop and hear real 'on the job' stories.

New and exciting programmes include Murder Mystery nights for adults and Junior Detective mysteries for children.  The museum will also provide forensic science programmes for schools and be available for use by community groups.

Children's TV celebrities Bryan and Bobby have made guest appearances in the past and hope to return to check out the new museum exhibit when it opens again.

Police work is often very harrowing and some areas of the Museum have displays that deal with issues and stories requiring parental guidance.  However there are plenty of interactive child friendly activities to keep young families occupied and entertained. Come and venture inside a 19th Century Police Station, jump onboard a Police motorbike, test you skills with our 'identify the suspect' computer game or try the Police uniform out for size.

Museum staff hope that visitors will leave the centre with an understanding of just who the NZ Police is and the various motivations for officers to serve their communities.

Date: Now open
