Book Review October 2006

Winging it! The Adventures of Tim Wallis by Neville Peat

Publisher: Longacre Press  Reading Age 12-15 Size:136 pp

Take a wild animal (red deer) in plague numbers, spread them across a remote and rugged terrain, throw in helicopters hell-bent on shooting or recovering them live, then add a daring pilot called Tim Wallis - these are the ingredients of a whirlwind adventure story. This is Tim's story and it is all true.

With Christmas just around the corner we have found a collection of books that are just ideal for the Christmas stocking. Our testing panel, with reading ages ranging from six to fifteen, have picked these as the best. We adults also think they are fantastic!

The Penguin Book - Birds in Suits by Dr Mark Norman

Publisher: Black Dog Books    Reading age 5+ Size 32 pp

Any kid who loves penguins must get this book. James, seven, thought it was just wonderful and was telling me all about penguins at the end of it!

Dr Mark Norman is a marine biologist and one of the world's foremost expert on cephalopod. His work with National Geographic and other nature magazines has covered giant squid, hug aggregations of southern giant cuttlefish and pioneering surveys of remote Indo-Pacific coral reefs.

The story of all 17 penguin species is covered in this book and details of where they live and play are well written for the young readers. Recommended for the Christmas stockings or any time you have a kid who loves penguins.

Kestrel by Mark Svendsen, Steven Woolman and Laura Peterson

Publisher: Lothian Books Reading age 5 +

I just loved this book, the pictures tell the story as much as the book.  A wonderful book to read to grandchildren. Its about a grandfather and grandson and the making of a very special dinghy called Kestrel.

With terms such as keel, bow, stern and anchor, it is a real must for children who love the sea and for grandparents who love to tell beautiful stories.

The Australian Twelve Days of Christmas by illustrator Heath McKenzie

Publisher: Black Dog Books      Size 24 pp

With our readership growing in Australia we thought it was only right to add this wonderful book to our book review.

This book celebrates the joy of an Australian Christmas. It is funny, tongue-in-cheek celebration of Australia's unique and quirky animals. Recommended for Christmas stockings, even the Kiwi kids who reviewed the book loved it!
