FLY INTO MOTAT AND CELEBRATE NEW ZEALAND ICON JEAN BATTEN

Come into MOTAT celebrate New Zealand icon Jean Batten!

Born in Rotorua in 1909, Jean Batten became world famous in the 1930s for her numerous aviation achievements. Her first record-breaking flight was in 1934 when she flew from England to Australia in 14 days, 22 hours, and 30 minutes, but this was only to be the first of many records to be shattered by Batten!

Walk through the same building where Jean herself spent time when she was the guest of honour in 1977 at the opening of MOTAT’s Pioneers of Aviation Building. From replicas of Batten’s aircrafts, including the De Havilland DH60 M Gipsy Moth and Percival Gull, to trophies of her success, MOTAT has all the aviation enthusiast could ask for!

MOTAT EXPLORES THE THRILLS AND CHILLS OF THE SOUTH POLE!

Embark on an intrepid journey this month at MOTAT, and step into the shoes of one of New Zealand’s greatest explorers – Sir Edmund Hillary.

MOTAT’s latest exhibition, ‘900  South - Sir Edmund Hillary and the NZ Antarctic Expedition 1956-8’, tells the story behind the extraordinary Trans-Antarctic Expedition, where Sir Ed led the New Zealand Ross Sea Party team to complete the first vehicular over land journey to the South Pole.

‘90° South’ has two main elements ‘Hellbent for the Pole’, where budding explorers can take a look behind Sir Ed’s determination and his meticulous ability to plan. The exhibit includes photographs and historical documents recording the journey that Sir Ed took when leading the New Zealand division. Visitors can also learn about the fifteen huskies that were bred at Auckland Zoo especially for the expedition.

Secondly, ‘Striking a Chord’, looks at Sir Ed’s past achievements and his place as a national hero.

The exhibition also features one of MOTAT’s most treasured artefacts – Sir Ed’s modified Massey Ferguson tractor, one of only three used by Sir Ed and his team to journey to the South Pole.

LIFE THROUGH THE EYES OF THOSE LEFT BEHIND

Come into MOTAT and step into the shoes of those left behind to protect New Zealand’s shores during WWI and WWII, with MOTAT’s detailed ‘While You Were Away’ exhibit.

Experience and hear about how these brave New Zealanders kept enemies at bay and succeeded in protecting crucial shores around the country.

Read about the impact of the US soldiers when they arrived in New Zealand during wartime.

Not only is MOTAT home to the exhibit ‘While You Were Away’, but Western Springs itself was a home away from home to the Yank soldiers, who had set up camp in the area. The charming and personable American men caused quite a stir amongst the Kiwi women!
