ACC gets kids moving with new
website
ACC recently launched a new online
game aimed at reducing childhood
Discomfort, Pain and Injury (DPI)
caused by computer use.
The game is called ‘Move It’and is
the brainchild of ESSIG (Ergonomics
in Schools Special Interest Group)
headed by Brenda Buchanan, a
concerned mother who came up with a
modern solution to a growing issue
for children.
Brenda Buchanan has suffered the
pain caused by DPI (Discomfort, Pain
and Injury) firsthand, and like any
caring mum she didn’t want her kids
to be burdened with the same aches
and pains. So rather than sitting
idly by while her children
complained about their sore necks,
backs and arms, caused by using a
computer or games consoles – Brenda
decided to do something about it.
“Aches and pains caused by huddling
around computers are a part of
everyday life now, and not just for
adults. Kids are spending more time
than ever with technology –
computers, cell phones, games
consoles and TVs – typically
remaining inactive in poor postures
for long periods. Because of this,
kids are suffering the same aches
and pains as your average adult
office worker. Adults get a lot of
messages about office exercises and
overcoming discomfort, pain and
injury (the injury often referred to
as OOS, or Occupational Overuse
Syndrome) and eye strain – kids just
don’t get those messages as
regularly. The aim of ‘Move It’ is
to encourage good life-long habits
for avoiding issues in the future.” |
