Situated in the Hauraki
Gulf, Kawau Island is rich in history. The island
was once a busy copper mining community and in the mid 1800s
became the home of Governor Sir George Grey. Governor Grey
purchased the island in 1862 and at the time was in his
second term as Governor of New Zealand.
Getting
there
As Kawau Island is just
that, an island, the best way to get there is by boat or ferry. Ferries and water-taxi's leave regularly from
Sandspit Wharf, near Warkworth, or ferries leave from
Auckland as well.

Mansion
House
When arriving
by ferry at Mansion House Bay you will get a view of Sir
Grey's beautiful historical mansion. This is open to the
public for viewing and is well worth a visit. The Mansion
House, its gardens and historical copper
mining sites make up the Kawau Island Historic
Reserve.
The Mansion House jetty
is believed to be the oldest surviving jetty in New
Zealand and dates back to 1875. The Department of
Conservation has recently restored the jetty.
