Clowns

Bring in the Clowns

I am not normally a nervous person, but when you are meeting a clown at a popular cafe, the question that comes to mind is; will he be in his working clothes? Worse was to come when Phillip, alias Dallas the Clown, did offer to dress in his clown suit! Luckily, we decided that normal cafe standards were more appropriate.

So how did Phillip become Dallas? Phillip wanted more than anything to be a magician. However, even though he worked professionally in a North Shore theatre company, (but not as a magician), the opportunity never arrived. Phillip had a few good magic tricks up his sleeve, and through a twist of fate you might say, he would go from his dream of being a magician to becoming a clown.

It all happened when Phillip's sister asked him if he could entertain her church group's children one year. Now unfortunately dressing up as a magician wasn't going to work - his sister pointed out that to the church this represented black magic and therefore was not suitable. After offering several different suggestions of costumes, Phillip finally came up with the idea of dressing up as a clown. And so Dallas the Clown was born.

Now there is more to being a clown than just wearing a silly wig and having a painted face. Like any acting job you need to work your audience and get it right. Audiences can comprise of ages from three years of age to seventy plus, and groups can range from five children to an audience of hundreds. Philip explains that the parents need to enjoy the show

as much as the kids do for it to be a successful show.

And what is the best thing about being a clown? Phillip says, "The best part is seeing the kids faces explode with smiles."

Phillip and his group of clowns, including Fluffy, Do Whacky Do and Chips, do shows from Whangarei down to just north of the Bombay Hills. They have been involved in Santa parades, the Warkworth Kowhai Festival and have also worked on Kawau Island.

Hiring a clown for parties

So what are the ins and outs of hiring a clown to entertain the kids at your children's party?

Recommendation. If you have seen a clown perform at a child's birthday party then you have a very good idea  of their material and what they are like. Also, ask around your friends:

  • Who have they had?

  • What did they think of the performance?

  • Would they hire them again?

How much does it cost and for how long? You can expect to pay around $140.00 to $160.00 for a birthday party. This would give you of a show of 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on who you book with.

  • When booking make sure you ask how long the performance will last?

Do Clowns scare kids? This might sound like a silly question but Phillip points out that a clown with a fully painted face, like Fluffy the Clown in the above picture, can be quite scary to a three year old.

Phillip suggests a half face for under six birthday parties and a full face for older children. "The half face looks more human", says Phillip, "As you can see some flesh, they (the children) seem to like it better."

What do parents need to do if hiring a clown? Phillip suggests put the coffee on and enjoy the show. "While the clown is entertaining the kids, parents could enjoy a coffee or get the food ready to eat at the end of the show. Hopefully a good clown will entertain both the parents and the kids."

He did suggest, "Please put some

balloons out by the letter box. "Normally this is the first time the clown will have come to the house and balloons are a good way of making sure he gets the right house!"
