| Recently Australia held its
census, like the New Zealand census it takes into
account only those living in the country at the time the
census was done and not those living overseas.
Advance, a network for professional Australian living
abroad and based in New York City in North America,
wanted to give Australian's living overseas a chance to
add their voices to the census and in association with
the Southern Cross Group launched a census of its own
called 'One Million More'. Advance hopes that this
census will ensure that Australia's one million
expatriates will have a voice.
At the time of this article nearly 5,000 Australians
had completed the census located at www.onemillionmore.com
and this accounts for about 8,500 Australians living
overseas. Elena Douglas, CEO of Advance, hopes that
10,000 Australians will complete the census it what she
calls a ground breaking initiative.
"Although living and working overseas, the
expatriate community is very much Australian and proudly
declare itself as such. Being some of our brightest and
most talented, the expatriate community needs to be
included in a census of the Australian population, along
with international students and visitors who have a
place in the official census forms. "One Million
More" gives all Australians the chance to be
counted."
The results of this survey will be analysed by
leading demographer, Professor Graeme Hugo, Federation
Fellow and Professor of the National Centre for Social
Application of GIS on the University of Adelaide and
preliminary results will be available in October 2006.
If you are an Australian and living in New Zealand
and would like to be involved in this survey, you can
find out details about the survey at www.onemillionmore.com
, the survey will be available online until 30 September
2006.
