Algies Bay - Come meet
the donkeys
Animals
and children are both unpredictable and enchanting at the same time.
And there is some magical when you see them together.
On a reserve between Algies Bay and
Snells Beach called Highfield Garden Reserve is a place where
children can get up close to some friendly donkeys. The reserve over
looks Kawau Bay and Algies Bay with walkways leading down to the
Algies Bay beach area.
We were disappointed that there were
no toilets at the reserve which is a magnet for families. But it is
an ideal picnic spot otherwise. At the entrance of the reserve you
can either take the road on the left which leads to the highest part
of the park. From this here you can get views
of both bays
and Kawau Island beyond. There are no power lines either and
only a few large trees so this spot is ideal for flying a kite or
two.
Take the fenced pathway to the right
and you will find a small pond, with ducks to feed and some table to
eat your lunch on. Then wander a little further through an old
orchard and you will find the donkeys.
The reserve is surrounded by
walkways, however they are not suitable for pushchairs or buggies
with a lot of stairs.
