Picture above: Cut from the rock edge along the Waitewheta River the narrow track leads you to the Talisman Battery Windows.

You begin the Talisman Battery Window Walk at the Karangahake Gorge car park. This large car park is about half way through the Karangahake Gorge and caters for all types of vehicles, including campervans and buses. The car park includes a sheltered picnic area and toilets.

The fun starts with accessing the track by one of three swinging bridges and being a loop track, one can start the walk by either viewing the ruins of the Talisman Battery Stampers or going in the opposite direction and taking the track that goes along the rock face of the Waitewheta River. Good walking shoes should be worn on the track, tramping boots are not necessary. As mentioned earlier torches are a must as you will be going through the some of the old mining tunnels. Some of these tunnels have windows cut through the rock and thanks to railing you can look out of these windows to the valley below.

Part of the original Talisman Battery built in 1890. At its height of production 50 stampers crushed rock to find gold.

The Talisman Battery was built in 1890 and when it was in full production had 50 stampers crushing rock to extract the gold out of them. What remains of the Battery now is just a skeleton of what existed. But thanks to the work of the Department of Conservation visitors can now experience some of excitement of those old mining days.

The Talisman Battery Window Walk is one of those walks that is just oooh so cool for  the kids to do. The walk was reopened in 2006 with the upgrading of the old goldmines, making them safer for visitors to walk through. A leisurely forty minute walk takes you along the narrow track that clings to the rock edge of the Waitewheta River, through old gold mining tunnels and ending at the Talisman Battery ruins.

The Window Walk is not suitable for pushchairs or wheel chairs due to the narrow paths and several sets of stairs. There are no steep hills to climb and although there are several sets of stairs, none are too steep.

The age group of the children we took on the walk were from six to eleven years old and none of them found it taxing at all. In fact the excitement of walking on the track with the river raging below and the prospect on tunnels had them eager to continue on the walk.

The Talisman Battery Window Walk is in the Karangahake Gorge, which is situated between Paeroa and Waihi in the North Island. Torches are a must as the mining tunnels are very dark, if you are lucky when you turn them off you may see hundreds of glow worms lighting up the low ceilings of the tunnels.
