Motat - Western Springs -
Auckland
A firm favourite with boys (and girls) of all
ages since it opened in 1964, the Museum of Transport and
Technology continues to display everything from steam
locomotives to a classroom from yesteryear.
The museum's centrepiece, as you enter the gates, is the
Pumphouse. The magnificently restored Beam engine is housed
here and still operates, though no longer performing its
original function of pumping water from Western Springs to
the houses and businesses of Auckland. This is only one part
of MOTAT which has over 300,000 items in its collection.
Far from all the displays being static, there are numerous
interactive displays in one of the pavilions and these are
always popular with the children. The expanded MOTAT
encompasses MOTAT 1 and MOTAT 2, the two sites linked by a
restored tram. MOTAT 2, at the Meola Road site, houses the
museum’s aircraft collection and plans are in place for an
expansion of the covered display area. MOTAT 2 is a
favourite with my 8-year-old.
The museum caters for both the casual visitor and for groups
.It also offers a school holiday programme. The family pass,
a good way to see MOTAT a number of times during the year,
allows entrance to two adults and four children (much better
than most attractions offer). My family have always found a
visit to be an enjoyable outing and good value.
Here's a tour of MOTAT in pictures. Better still, take a
half day and visit yourself!
