Healthy teeth and gums for expectant mums

Keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy is important all the time. However, it’s especially important during pregnancy. So if you’re expecting, think of it as brushing for two…

Did you know that at birth a full set of primary teeth has begun to form underneath your baby’s gums?

Even though your baby’s teeth won’t start appearing in the mouth until he or she is between six and 10 months old, teeth start developing under the surface when they are in the womb.

At the same time it is really important to protect your gums during pregnancy, as you are at greater risk of hormonal shifts which can exaggerate the way your gums react to plaque, leaving a tendency toward potential gum problems.  So it’s important to use a toothpaste like Colgate Total which helps protect the teeth and gums.

The bacteria which cause cavities in your own teeth can be passed on to your baby, so you should aim to reduce your exposure to these bacteria wherever possible. This can be done by brushing and flossing daily, stopping smoking, eating a healthy diet and limiting the number of sugary snacks and drinks you consume.

So for all those soon-to-be mums, remember that maintaining good oral health is an important part of pregnancy.

Keep healthy by visiting your dentist regularly during pregnancy, flossing daily and brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day.

And remember, good oral health starts at home, so create daily oral health habits so you and your family can combat cavities and help keep those smiles bright!
