There is part of me that wants to tell you about this very special spot, Ohiwa. It is a wonderful family holiday spot. But there is another part of me that wants to keep it a secret. Why? Because now you will know what a beautiful place it is as well!

Ohiwa Harbour is located between Ohope and Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty. If you stand on the beach you can see three islands, Moutoki, Moutohora and White Island. White Island of course is best known because it is an active volcanic island which smokes away - but more about that a bit later.

There isn't much at Ohiwa, just a few holiday homes and the Ohiwa Family Holiday Park. The holiday park is very family friendly and was where Kids Friendly New Zealand stayed. We would recommend this park without hesitation. It is clean with great children's areas including a large inflatable cushion which was about the size of a large swimming pool which kept children entertained for hours.

The park also runs a children's holiday programme during the summer school holidays, giving parents at the camp a chance to relax even more. The park is located between the Ohiwa Harbour inlet and the beach. We spoke to several families there and to our surprise many were locals, with others coming from as far as Auckland and Wellington.

Around Ohiwa there isn't much to do except relax. Other activities include fishing, kayaking and swimming. The beach is an ocean beach which means that care should be taken and swimming around the inlet is not recommended. The inlet itself is ideal for kayaking when the tide is high.

One family we spoke to used Ohiwa as their base for a week of kayaking and fishing around the various lakes within the Rotorua region.

Another feature we liked was that the town of Whakatane was just over thirty minutes

away which proved to be a godsend as our daughter developed severe earache which required a doctor's visit and medication. The town of Whakatane is large enough to cater for all your family needs with ample shopping, local picture theatre and eateries. It is also your gateway to White Island. A family trip to the island, which takes a full day, is recommended for children over eight years of age and at around $150.00 per person is not a cheap option. This trip includes a boat trip to the island and around a two-and-a-half-hour walk on the island. Due to the nature of the island, gas masks are provided and visitors must follow strict instructions for their own safety. Another less direct way to see the island is by air, with flights lasting around 45 minutes.

Ohiwa would make a great stop for those travelling  either north or south between Whakatane and Gisborne along either State Highway 2 or State Highway 35. State Highway 2 is bordered by the Urewera National Park and the Raukumara Forest Park. State Highway 35 takes you around the cape which is dotted with small towns and villages along the way.
