As
winter approaches us, the number of people affected by diseases
like meningitis starts to increase. This month we are running a
special feature on meningitis. It covers everything from what symptoms you need
to look for through to survivors' stories.
The
reason this issue is especially important to me is that my family
has seen meningitis more than once. The disease took the life of my
uncle when he was an infant. It nearly robbed me of my youngest son and
would leave another child with developmental delays that with time
and patience we are overcoming.
So
please take the time to read our stories and learn more about the
disease — and I hope that you will never have to go through what I
have.
By
the way, the smiling lad on the front cover of June's issue is my
son Andrew and he is a meningitis survivor. It was only the
thoughtful actions of Dr Miller (no relation) in Whangamata that
saved my son's life and to this day I am forever thankful.
Continuing on the winter illness theme, Pharmac is running its
annual campaign on antibiotics awareness, a timely reminder to
families on when antibiotics should be used.
On
a much happier note, with school holidays just around the corner
again, we have a great article on skiing and a wonderful family ski
package from www.nzski.com to
give away
So enjoy this month
and keep safe.
Cheers
